Columbia, SC – Joy Lynn Spencer of Lexington, South Carolina has been named a Semifinalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Joy is currently a student at Provost Academy, which is a state-authorized public online high school that is tuition-free to residents of South Carolina.
Miss Spencer is one of approximately 16,000 students in the United States who have earned this distinct honor – out of 1.5 million who entered. They are the highest-scoring entrants in each state and represent less than 1% of each state’s high school seniors. South Carolina has 205 Semifinalists and 202 Commended Students.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recognition and scholarships that is open to all U.S. high school students who meet published entry requirements. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization. Semifinalists named in each year’s Merit Scholarship competition show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Fifty thousand entrants qualify for program recognition either as Commended Students or Semifinalists, and about 9,600 outstanding young men and women receive scholarships for college undergraduate study. The awards are valued at more than $46 million.
Emma Stratton of Columbia, South Carolina, also a student at Provost Academy, was named a Commended Scholar in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
